It is way too much in my opinion. There are too many girls and their parents who cannot "afford" to spend this kind of money on a single event, yet "society" dictates that it is so important. It's too bad they can't just get a nice dress that doesn't cost a fortune, go and enjoy themselves without having to try and outdo each other. Parents get caught up in this lunacy and spend money that would be better used elsewhere. It's like buying a wedding dress. One use and costs a fortune. The whole thing is absurd and way out of control.

I would say if you are getting the dress high street eg Topshop, Warehouse then around 80-120 for the dress the hair and make up would be like 50 depending on what you want, but you really don't need to spend hundreds on the dress I know plently of girls who looked stunning and didn't up spending hundreds on their dress as long as you invest some time to finding the right dress it will be ok :).

id say 200 max. you can get a cute dress cheap! shoes around 40 would be reasonable...do your own hair and makeup, with what you already have. dont spend too much, especailly if your never going to wear it again!! :]
